GUWAHATI, Feb 22: As part of ‘Sewa Sankalp Saptah’, Lok Bhavan, Assam under the leadership of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in association with the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch, organised a blood donation camp at the IRCS at Chandmari here on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Acharya said that blood donation is a noble activity of humanitarian services. He said that the camp organised by Lok Bhavan in association with the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch is a noble initiative of human service. He said that the camp symbolises compassion, empathy and selfless service, values that the Red Cross has consistently upheld through its humanitarian efforts.
The Governor observed that the blood donation camp reflects Assam’s collective spirit of service, social responsibility and shared commitment to humanity. He remarked that in Indian culture, service has always been regarded as the highest duty, forming the foundation of the nation’s civilisational ethos. Referring to the rich tradition of sacrifice and dedication, he cited examples from history and mythology that continue to inspire generations.

Highlighting Assam’s cultural legacy, the Governor said that the teachings of Srimanta Sankardev continue to inspire society to embrace service as the true purpose of life. He also recalled the immortal words “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” by Assam’s legendary artist and Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, stating that the message of human unity and compassion resonates strongly in initiatives like blood donation camps.
Describing blood donation as one of the greatest forms of charity, the Governor said that it gives a new lease of life to patients in need. He noted that voluntary blood donation also carries health benefits for donors, including stimulation of new blood cell production and reduction of certain heart-related risks, besides providing a profound sense of satisfaction.
A particularly inspiring feature of the camp was the presence of regular donors who have donated blood multiple times. Hariman Deka (96 times), Prakash D Atreya (62 times) and Prabin Barua (25 times) were specially acknowledged for their exemplary commitment to humanitarian service. The Governor lauded them as role models for the youth, stating that each act of donation represents a silent yet powerful effort to save an unknown life.
Calling upon citizens, especially the youth, to adopt voluntary blood donation as a social responsibility, the Governor urged them to donate blood at least once a year and motivate others to do the same. He appreciated the significant contributions of the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch, which, with more than 5,000 trained volunteers and an extensive branch network has established a strong identity in disaster management, health services, first aid training and community welfare across the state. He expressed confidence that the organisation would continue to expand its humanitarian outreach to every corner of Assam.
The Governor also conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, technicians, volunteers and generous donors whose dedicated efforts made the camp meaningful and successful. He called upon all to move forward together in strengthening the ideals of humanity, compassion and service to build a healthy, safe and strong Assam.
Vice Chairman, the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch, Dr P Ashok Babu; Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram; Chairman the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch AK Absar Hazarika, former Vice Chairman and Padma Shri awardee Ajay Dutta, office bearers and staff members of the organisation; officers of the Health Department, doctors, nurses;,volunteers and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
