BOKAJAN, March 12: In its continued drive against smuggling of narcotic drugs, police in Karbi Anglong recovered 5 kg of heroin worth Rs 30 crore from a white Bolero vehicle at Khatkhati bordering Nagaland on Sunday.

“Based on specific information on the movement of a vehicle carrying drugs, a Naka was set up at the National Highway in front of the SBI Khatkhati branch. Our team intercepted a white Bolero car bearing registration number AS 09 J 4746 coming from Dimapur around 10 am,” said John Das, SDPO, Bokajan.

“During the search, we recovered 390 soap cases containing 5 kg of heroin which were concealed by making a secret chamber in the roof of the vehicle. The secret chamber was welded properly to hide the consignment,” Das said.

“We have arrested the driver of the vehicle identified as Md Fujel Ahmed (41) son of Lt Mufasil Ali in this connection. He hails from Islam Nagar in Assam’s Hojai district,” Das also said.

“The consignment was loaded in Dimapur and was supposed to be delivered at Nagaon bypass,” he added.

Hailing the police action, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday tweeted, “Huge catch by @assampolice! @karbianglongpol intercepted a vehicle at Khatkhati and seized 390 soap cases containing 5.1 kg Heroin hidden inside its secret chamber. Also apprehended one accused. Excellent work team. Keep it up.”

The smuggling of narcotic drugs through this interstate border has been a routine affair. The police and other investigation agencies have made many recoveries and arrested many persons since June 2021, but there is no let-up of the situation.
