DIBRUGARH, Nov 2: In a general meeting held at New Market Harijan Colony under the leadership of Ranjan Chowdhury, President of Harijan Mazdoor Union (HMU), Dibrugarh Municipality, several pressing concerns regarding the welfare of safai workers were discussed. The meeting highlighted the challenges faced by these workers, particularly in the aftermath of a recent fire incident that ravaged 15 residences belonging to the safai workers in Dibrugarh Municipality.
Ranjan Chowdhury emphasized the neglect faced by the Safai workers, the stalwarts of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “We demand immediate compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the affected families,” stated Chowdhury.
The HMU President further expressed disappointment over the lack of sufficient support from the Dibrugarh Municipality, especially in light of the fire incident. “Despite citing a lack of funds, the Municipality has not made significant efforts to address the concerns of the Safai workers. The demand to publicize the top one hundred tax defaulters’ list, essential for the community’s welfare, remains unaddressed,” Chowdhury added.
Highlighting the pressing need for better accommodations and basic amenities for the Safai workers, Chowdhury urged the Dibrugarh Municipality Board to construct proper RCC buildings for their settlement.
The HMU submitted a memorandum to Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) Chairman, Saikat Patra, seeking urgent attention and action towards the welfare of the affected Safai worker families.
