GUWAHATI, Dec 1: In a pioneering initiative, the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G), has introduced a three-month training program on drone technology specifically designed for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and other officers. The objective is to modernize the operations of the armed forces and provide participants with valuable skills for potential post-retirement career opportunities.
This unique program will focus on delivering comprehensive training in drone technologies, covering aspects such as pilot training, software operations, and applications, as stated by Dean Parameswar K Iyer of IITG’s Centre for Drone Technology. The first batch of the program comprises 30 personnel from various branches of the armed forces.
The certificate program aims to equip armed forces personnel with drone technology skills, enhancing their career prospects, particularly post-retirement. According to T V Bharat, Head of the Centre for Educational Technology at IIT-G, the training program is designed to benefit senior officers by preparing them for diverse opportunities in the drone industry or as technology entrepreneurs.
The initiative involves collaboration between the Centre for Educational Technology, Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems (CICPS), Centre for Drone Technology, and IITG Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF). Experienced faculty from different departments and centers at IIT-G are leading the training program, providing theoretical insights and practical hands-on experience to the participants.
The program structure includes a combination of theoretical classroom sessions and practical training, covering both fundamental and operational aspects of drone technology. It is anticipated that the initiative will contribute to the development of skilled personnel within the armed forces and open up avenues for entrepreneurial ventures or second careers in technology for military personnel.
