MARGHERITA, July 1: On Saturday, the Central GST Department in Dibrugarh confiscated a truck loaded with illegal timber, bearing registration number AS 01 PC 8051. This came after the Forest Department of Margherita previously seized another truck, with registration number NL 01 AD 8077, on June 29 for lacking proper documents.
Both seized vehicles were found to be owned by Govin Sarkar from Barpeta.
Chow Bimal Handique, president of the All Tai Ahom Student Union (ATASU) Dibrugarh Sadar Committee, stated that on June 29, forest officials in Margherita’s west range seized a fully loaded illegal timber vehicle belonging to M/S Maharaja Forest Products, located at 17th Mile Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh. After being stamped with TP (Transportation Permit) and GST bill by Central GST officials, the vehicle was allowed to proceed.
Handique further expressed disappointment, stating that the BJP-led Assam government claims to protect the culture, land, and homes of Assam, but in reality, illegal syndicates for coal, timber, areca nut, sand, stone, and boulders operate smoothly in the state.
ATASU Dibrugarh Sadar Committee demanded that the Central GST Department in Dibrugarh seized the illegally loaded timber vehicles and take legal action against the timber smugglers and tax evaders.
