DIBRUGARH, Aug 3: Incessant heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms have inundated the National Highway (NH) -37 in Dibrugarh on Thursday resulting in immense difficulty for commuters to pass by.
Heavy rains lashed the Dibrugarh town on Wednesday, inundating several low-lying localities. The locals as well as students could be seen wading through ankle deep water to reach their schools, colleges and other places situated on the national highway.
The thunderstorm also uprooted several trees on the road leading to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), causing traffic snarls.
“Private cars as well as heavy vehicles get stuck in traffic snarls due to severe water-logging on NH-37,” said Khagen Das, a local resident.
“I had to walk through the dirty rainwater to reach my college in the morning. To make matters worse there was immense traffic congestion on the road, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk,” said Anita Singh, a school student.
Due to rampant encroachment near the Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) drain, the rain water from the town cannot flow out through the drain. This has resulted in water-logging in several areas of the town.
Similarly, the road near Hotel Garden Treat that has now become an important link road connecting the Thana Chariali area to other places, is the worst affected. The dismantling of the Over Bridge to make way for a flyover is another factor that has resulted in water-logging.
“Every year water-logging occurs mainly because of the poor drainage system. Although the department concerned constructs roads in every ward, they refrain from digging up drains adjacent to these roads. Faulty and unscientific construction of roads and drains results in flash floods every year,” said Ramen Gogoi, a local resident.
The road leading to Banipur that acts as the lifeline of the town, was also inundated with rain water following the heavy spell of thunder showers.
