GUWAHATI, June 25: Indus Towers Limited has inaugurated seven new sanitation facilities in government schools across Kamrup, Mankachar, Goalpara, Barpeta, Darrang, and Jorhat districts as part of its hygiene and health initiative for schoolgirls in Northeast India.
The initiative was formally launched at a function held at Satgaon High School in Guwahati.
According to an official statement, the facilities were inaugurated by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and Rajender Gurung, Circle CEO (NESA), Indus Towers Ltd.
The initiative, implemented under the company’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme ‘Pragati’, is aligned with the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and aims to bridge critical infrastructure gaps in schools while promoting menstrual health awareness among adolescent girls.
Speaking at the event, education minister Ranoj Pegu said, “Access to proper sanitation plays a crucial role in promoting health and safety, especially for young girls. I appreciate the efforts of Indus Towers Limited and NEAID in improving school infrastructure in Assam. This initiative is well aligned with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and I look forward to seeing its positive impact on students’ well-being and attendance.”
Alongside the construction of hygienic washrooms, the initiative also includes menstrual hygiene workshops aimed at dispelling social taboos and equipping students with essential health knowledge.
Rajender Gurung of Indus Towers said, “Through our flagship CSR program Pragati, we aim to address critical infrastructure gaps and empower the education of young girls in Assam. By providing safe and accessible sanitation facilities, we hope to foster a supportive environment for better learning outcomes.”
Indus Towers has so far built 23 sanitation facilities in government schools across Northeast India under this initiative, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Northeast Centre for Equity Action on Integrated Development (NEAID).
