DIPHU, Oct 27: A 12-member Karbi cultural troupe showcased a medley of traditional Karbi dances on the world stage at the ongoing five-day 15th Cultural Olympiad of Performing Arts, being held from October 25 to 29 at Burapha University, Pattaya, Thailand.
The troupe performed Ritnong Chingdi (cultivation dance), Han Up Ahi Kebi (community bamboo shoot collection dance), Lengpum Sokchon (paddy pounding dance), and Hacha Kekan (post-harvest dance), depicting the agrarian life and cultural heritage of the Karbi community.
The performance, staged before a packed audience at 6 p.m., drew attention for its distinct rhythm, traditional music and vibrant attire.
The festival has been organised by Akhil Bhartiya Sankruti Sansthan (ABSS) Global Council of Art & Culture, an official partner of UNESCO, to bring together artistes from across the world.
Several tribal communities from India are also participating to showcase their traditional performing arts.
The Karbi troupe, representing the Karbi Traditional Music and Cultural Research Institute (KTMCRI) under the Art & Culture Department of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), comprises 12 performers and officials, a team of 20 led by KAAC Executive Member (Art & Culture) Surya Rongphar, Tribal Culture Research Officer Dilip Kathar, and KTMCRI Principal Bonsam Kathar.
The group left for Thailand on October 24.
Members of the Karbi Cultural Society, including general secretary Sunil Tokbi, publicity secretary Hingchong Tisso, office secretary Suren Hanse and secretary (traditional attire) Francis Timung, are also part of the delegation.
Speaking after the performance, TCRO Dilip Kathar said the troupe’s presentation received enthusiastic appreciation.
“The dance was unique and captivating, with perfect coordination between the footsteps and the rhythm of the drums. Many in the audience recorded the performance on their phones,” he said.
He added that presenting Karbi culture on a global platform was a moment of pride and an opportunity to introduce the community’s rich heritage to the world. The results of the competition will be announced on October 28.
