GUWAHATI, Dec 18: The Mother Teresa Social Welfare Mission of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) organised an eye screening camp on Thursday in collaboration with Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati, at Andherijuli (Para) village under the Rani Development Block. The village is one of the adopted villages of KKHSOU, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to community welfare and inclusive outreach.
The camp was held at the local LP School, aiming to provide preventive and curative eye care services while raising awareness about eye health, hygiene and the importance of timely medical intervention. A medical team of nine optometrists and two supervisors from Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya conducted comprehensive eye screenings and consultations for the villagers.
Under the initiative, ration card holders diagnosed with cataract will receive free cataract surgery at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, along with complimentary transportation to and from the hospital, facilitated by the hospital authorities as part of their community outreach programme.
During the camp, optometrist Angshuman Baruah emphasised the importance of regular eye screening and early intervention to prevent vision-related complications and improve quality of life. Out of 51 villagers screened, 15 were diagnosed with cataract.
The camp was coordinated by Dr Bhaskar Bhattacharya, Chairperson of the Mother Teresa Social Welfare Mission, along with Dr Trisha Dowerah Baruah and Chayan Kakati, coordinators of Andherijuli (Para) village on behalf of KKHSOU. The successful organisation of the camp underscores the university’s efforts to integrate social responsibility with educational outreach for the holistic development of rural communities.
