MARGHERITA, May 1: International Labour Day, or May Day, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Pengree Tea Estate in Tinsukia under the aegis of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, Margherita Branch, in collaboration with the Pengree Tea Garden Unit Committee. The event witnessed the active participation of tea garden workers, who turned the playground of Pengree Tea Estate into a bustling hub of energy and solidarity. A large gathering of workers from 38 tea estates under the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Margherita Branch assembled at the venue, creating a spectacular and inspiring scene.
Assam Government Labour Minister Rupesh Gwala and Digboi Legislative Assembly Constituency MLA Suren Phukan graced the occasion as distinguished guests. Both leaders addressed the enthusiastic crowd, delivering motivational and insightful speeches focused on workers’ rights, welfare and the dignity of labour.
The programme was hosted by Harinanda Gorh, Secretary of ACMS Margherita Branch and commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the flag, followed by Shaheed Tarpan and floral tributes at the portrait of Assam heartthrob Zubeen Garg.
Throughout the day, the atmosphere remained lively with a host of colourful cultural and competitive events. Sports competitions, singing and dance performances involving children, youth and women added joy and vibrancy to the celebrations.
Tea garden workers across the globe observed May 1 as International Labour Day to honour the historic struggles and sacrifices made by labourers in their fight for justice, fair wages and better working conditions.
The event at Pengree Tea Estate stood as a powerful testament to the unity, resilience and indomitable spirit of the 200-year-old tea industry of Assam.
Our NAGAON Correspondent adds: Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma marked International May Day with a unique programme on Friday, spending the day with farmers and workers and felicitating them with ‘phulam gamosa’.
In the morning, through the Labour Department, the DC invited members of several labour unions to the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s office and held discussions with them on the significance of May Day.
Highlighting the indispensable contribution of workers to the nation’s development, Sharma said that everyone must move forward together, hand in hand. To enliven the event, he sang Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s iconic song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” along with those present.
The workers attending the programme were felicitated with ‘phulam gamosa’ and extended May Day greetings.
Later, the District Commissioner visited the fields of Shyamali Krishi Farm at Senchowa and felicitated several progressive farmers of the area with ‘phulam gamosa’. There too, he explained the history and significance of Labour Day and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the role of farmers in the country’s progress.
District Agriculture Officer Nikhil Narayan Baruah was also present at the event.
