MARGHERITA, Nov 15: The 22nd Foundation Day of the Margherita Journalists Association was celebrated in Margherita on Friday.
A delegation of the Margherita Journalists Association distributed fruits among the sick patients at Margherita Civil Hospital in the morning to coincide with the foundation day.
It is to be noted that the Margherita Journalists Association has been playing a significant role in society since its formation on November 15, 2002 at Adarsha Hindi Vidyalaya, Bargolai.
Following this, an intimate talk program was held at the meeting hall of the Ledo Central Namghar, where veteran journalist, eminent litterateur, noted educationist, social worker, and renowned artist of the Ledo region, Jagat Changmai, was felicitated with a traditional Assamese cheleng chador, Assamese phoolam gamosa, and a commemorative memento. The talk program was presided over by Ram Prasad Ambedkar, president of the Margherita Journalists Association. The event was attended by Kailash Kumar Gupta, president of the All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad Central Committee; Chandra Gautam, president of the Ledo Xakha Xahitya Xabha; noted singer Babita Chowdhury; Ledo Junior College professor Dipanwita Biswas; and members of the Margherita Journalists Association.
Rana Jyoti Neog, general secretary of the Margherita Journalists Association, in his speech, said that the association was formed on November 15, 2002 at Adarsha Hindi Vidyalaya, Bargolai, in the presence of Ram Prasad Ambedkar, Biswajit Sengupta, Rajiv Ningkhee, Kisan Lama, Mohan Chetry, Amit Das, Partho Pratim Goswami, Pabitra Borgohain, and Sunil Gurung.
Since its formation, the members of the Margherita Journalists Association have not only written news but also engaged in various social activities, earning the association widespread recognition. Even now, all social activities are conducted under the banner of the Margherita Journalists Association, said Rana Jyoti Neog.
Jagat Changmai said, “In the year 1974, I came to Ledo, and in 1988, I started journalism at Dainik Janambhumi, a popular newspaper of Assam. In 1993, I began writing for The Sentinel and Natun Dainik, newspapers of Assam.”
“In those days, journalism was very challenging as there was no internet, no email, no WhatsApp, or other facilities. Despite this, we sent news regularly, reporting whatever we could. Journalism is a very honest and holy profession, and I appeal to all upcoming journalists of the Margherita region to be polite, punctual, and cooperative with the people around them. In this democratic system, journalists often become soft targets,” said Jagat Changmai.
