Guwahati, June 12: In yet another unfortunate incident, a massive pipe burst occurred near Gauhati Commerce College on RG Baruah Road, leading to chaos among residents.
The incident, took place on Rajgarh Road near Commerce College Link Road and caused significant damage to properties. It created a state of chaos and panic among the residents. Despite the significant damage caused to properties in the surrounding area, no human lives were harmed in this unfortunate incident.
As news of the pipe burst spread, the local administration swiftly responded, dispatching a team from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority to the scene. Their primary objective was to bring the gushing water under control and mitigate further damage. Efforts are currently underway to contain the situation and restore normalcy to the affected area.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that local shops, including musical instrument stores, bore the brunt of the incident. These establishments suffered severe damages, resulting in substantial financial losses. It is estimated that properties worth lakhs of rupees have been affected by the pipe burst.
Reflecting on the incident Cabinet Minister of Assam, Ashok Singhal took to twitter.
“Rushed to the spot immediately after the incident to take stock of the situation at Rajgarh & Gauhati Commerce College link road, where a drinking water pipe exploded causing some damage nearby,” said Singhal.
In response to this alarming event, Singhal has called for an urgent meeting with all senior officials of the Guwahati Jal Board later today. With an ongoing high-level inquiry following a similar incident in Kharguli, the Minister reassured the public that every effort will be made to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
Stressing that these accidents are completely unacceptable, Singhal further affirmed that strict and prompt action will be taken to address the issue and prioritize the safety of citizens.

While the swift response by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority is commendable, it serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address the underlying issues in Guwahati’s water supply system. The frequency of such incidents raises concerns about the adequacy of maintenance protocols and the overall state of the aging water distribution system.
Just last month, two similar incidents occurred in Guwahati, raising concerns about the city’s water infrastructure. An under-construction flyover in the city experienced a major water pipeline rupture, causing water spillage and traffic congestion.
Another devastating water supply pipeline burst in the Kharguli region resulted in the displacement of households, damage to residences, injuring five, and tragically claiming a woman’s life.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for thorough assessments and proactive measures to address the vulnerabilities in Guwahati’s water supply network. The authorities must prioritize upgrading and maintaining the aging infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.
