TEZPUR, June 5: Highlighting the urgent need for proper environmental management and reducing carbon footprints, Minister Ashok Singhal called for responsible behavior from all sections of society during World Environment Day celebrations held across Sonitpur district.
Minister Singhal led the tree plantation program at Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College campus in Dhekiajuli, where he planted a guava sapling as a symbolic gesture towards greener surroundings.
In his address, he stressed that combating environmental challenges requires a collective commitment to sustainable practices, urging individuals and institutions alike to adopt eco-friendly habits to protect the planet.
The program saw enthusiastic participation from NCC cadets, college principal Dr Sukdev Adhikari, Governing Body president Dr Jogendra Saikia, IQAC Coordinator Dr Hari Prasad Baruah, HOD Commerce Bikash Baruah, students, and faculty members, underscoring the importance of involving the youth in environmental stewardship.
In a related event, the College NCC organised a tree plantation drive at the newly inaugurated Borsola Model College.
Principal i/c Dr Sukdev Adhikari and Governing Body President Dr Jogendra Saikia planted bakul and mango saplings, reinforcing Minister Singhal’s message about the vital role of tree planting in maintaining ecological balance.
Across Sonitpur district, institutions and organisations marked the day with various awareness activities aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues.
The Assam Science Society and Darrang College focused on ending plastic pollution, while schools such as Tezpur Academy High School and Jugal Higher Secondary School engaged students through art competitions and plantation drives.
A key district-wide initiative was the staging of the street play ‘Nadir Asukh’ (Sickness of River), which portrayed themes of climate change, deforestation, and pollution.
The play toured five Legislative Assembly Constituencies, including Tezpur and Rangapara, reaching a wide audience and encouraging sustainable conservation efforts.
District Commissioner Ankur Bharali and MLA Prithiraj Rava, among other officials, echoed the call for reducing single-use plastics and adopting environmentally responsible practices in daily life.
Through these collective efforts and Minister Ashok Singhal’s emphasis on responsible environmental management, Sonitpur district demonstrated a strong commitment to safeguarding the environment and building a sustainable future.
