GUWAHATI, March 15: Four heritage water sites in Assam have been recognized among the 75 Water Heritage Structures by a committee framed by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The meandering flow of Assam’s waterways carries the “tradition and history”, according to Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal, who mentioned this in a statement pertaining to the topic. The Ministry of Jal Shakti committee has chosen four heritage water sites out of the 75 water heritage locations, which is a source of great pride for Assam.

According to Urban Ministry, “There is no provision under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, to declare a site as a Water Heritage Site under the Archaeological Survey of India.” In honor of India’s 75th anniversary of independence, the Ministry of Jal Shakti established a committee to select 75 Water Heritage Structures (WHS).
A total of 421 nominations from States/UTs, Central Agencies, NGOs, and the general public were received. Out of these nominations, the committee recommended 75 water heritage structures, of which four were from Assam. There are many states and union territories where India’s water heritage structures can be found. One such project can be found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while there are four, three, and five of these structures in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Gujarat, respectively.
