MORIGAON, July 4:
Sahai, a prominent socio-cultural organisation based in Morigaon, has announced its ambitious plan to erect a 14-feet-tall statue of the legendary Ahom commander, Lachit Borphukan, in Delhi by the end of this year. Led by its chief functionary, Raju Mahanta, the organisation has commenced the necessary procedures for the installation of the statue, which will honour the esteemed historical figure.
In an interview with ‘The Hills Times’, Raju Mahanta stated, “We are currently in the process of obtaining permission from the government of Delhi/Municipal Corporation to erect the statue at a suitable location in Delhi. To raise funds for the construction, we are considering collecting donations ranging from Rs 50 to 100 from interested individuals across Assam.”
Sahai, known for its dedication to societal upliftment since its establishment, has been actively involved in various philanthropic activities. In line with their commitment, the organisation recently presented the ‘Vaishnav Pandit Dayal Krishna Bora Memorial Brahmaputra Upatyaka Samaj Hitoihe Bata – 2023’ to Manoj Kumar Goswami, a distinguished journalist, storyteller, and recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award. The presentation took place on July 7, 2023, at the Morigaon Pabitora Hut, attracting a large audience.
Notably, Sahai extends its efforts beyond cultural endeavours, as it also focuses on providing shelter to the homeless and aiding destitute individuals within the district. With the upcoming statue project, the organisation aims to commemorate the valour and contributions of Lachit Borphukan, further enriching the cultural landscape of Delhi with a symbol of historical significance.
