GUWAHATI, March 2: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has strengthened its operational infrastructure with the commissioning of a Load Box Testing facility at the newly constructed DEMU shed at New Bongaigaon Carriage & Wagon Workshop, a move expected to significantly improve DEMU train availability and passenger convenience across the Northeast.
The workshop has completed key electrical modifications, including cable extensions and installation of an additional panel to conduct Load Box testing within the new shed.
The upgraded facility ensures safe and reliable power supply for testing activities and eliminates the earlier need to shift Driving Power Cars (DPCs) of DEMU rakes to separate locations for testing.
With the commissioning of the in-house testing facility, unnecessary shunting operations have been reduced, minimizing time loss and optimizing manpower utilisation.
Officials said the streamlined workflow will enable faster turnaround of DEMU rakes and enhance overall operational efficiency.
In parallel, NFR has undertaken measures to augment and maintain DEMU rakes to meet growing passenger demand, particularly on short-distance and suburban routes.
The improved maintenance and testing capacity is expected to ensure higher service availability, greater reliability and improved punctuality.
The benefits of the infrastructure push extend beyond railway operations.
Increased DEMU availability will directly support daily commuters, students, small traders and office-goers across Assam and other northeastern states.
Improved rail connectivity is also expected to facilitate access to markets, healthcare and educational institutions, while strengthening integration between remote and semi-urban areas and major railway junctions.
NFR officials said the zone remains committed to adopting modern technology, upgrading workshop capabilities and enhancing passenger services in line with the broader vision of Indian Railways to provide safe, efficient and passenger-friendly transportation.
Through continued infrastructure development and service augmentation, NFR aims to further accelerate regional connectivity and socio-economic growth in the Northeast.
