DIPHU, Jan 5: Rongker, an annual prayer for prosperity, good health and for protection against sickness and all evils, was performed in most of Karbi villages in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
It is an annual religious obligation to perform Rongker in Karbi villages for protection against all evils and sickness by seeking the mercy of Hemphu, the almighty so that everyone can prosper and reap a bountiful harvest without any hassles.
The older men of the villages assisted by youths perform Rongker by offering animal sacrifices to Hemphu, Mukrang and Rasinja and other Karbi deities.
At the Rongchingri village of Diphu town, Rongker was performed at Rongker Adovan (Rongker ground). A dovan, which is an altar for offering sacrifices, was prepared in the morning, around which the people gathered.
The Kurusars wearing new clothes (seleng) sat in-front of the dovans to perform the animal sacrifices. Before the sacrifice was made the Kurusars invoked the names of Hemphu, Mukrang, Rasinja and other local deities.
The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) had announced a restricted holiday on account of Rongker.
