DIPHU, April 9: After a gap of five years, the villagers of Jammunapar Mouza under 50 Sarkari Gaonburas have come together to perform Wophong Rongker at Waisong ground 5th Miles, Nihang Rongkethe on the outskirt of Diphu town on Sunday.
Unlike the annual Rongker, the Wophong Rongker is observed once in five years and the jurisdiction covered is in larger numbers. The Wophong Rongker is not performed in all villages, but is done on the willingness of villagers.
On the day, animal sacrifice is offered to Hemphu, Mukrang, Rasinja and other local deities for their appeasement and to protect from all evils, sicknesses and misfortunes. The local residents of the villages also believe the act to be one seeking blessings from the almighty (Hemphu) for good cultivation and prosperity in the village.
Participating in the Wophong Rongker, MLA Bidyasing Engleng sought blessings from the almighty by lighting earthen lamps and offering flowers at the feet of Waisong statue – a legendary Karbi figure.
The MLA said that MLA Local Area Development will provide Rs 5 lakh for leveling of Rongker ground.
Vice president, Wophong Rongker Committee, Jemson Ronghang on the occasion appreciated the move by the villagers and said that it was very heartwarming to see the villagers under 50 SGBs under Jammunapar Mouza coming together to observe Wophong Rongker. “The villagers come together once every five years to perform Wophong Rongker. The Wophong Rongker is performed for prosperity and good health in the villages,” he said.
Later, a community feast was arranged and served to villagers and dignitaries.
