BISWANATH CHARIALI, Dec 22: Purna Kumar Sarmah, the chief secretary of Assam Nepali Natya Sammelan has been awarded with Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2022 in the category of the Nepali language for his translation of the novel ‘Santanu Kulanandan’, which is a translation of the Assamese novel written by Purabi Bormudoi.
Notably, Sarmah has many books to his credit. He is proficient in Assamese, Nepali and Hindi language as well.
Individuals and organisations including Chandramani Upadhyaya, chairman, Assam Nepali Natya Sammelan, Durga Khatiwora and Dr Chinta Mani Sharma, president and executive president of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha, Chhatraman Subba and Anjan Baskota, president and secretary of Freedom Fighter Prasad Singh Subba Memorial Academy beside others conveyed best wishes to Sarmah for his achievement.
Sarmah is a retired teacher and a permanent resident of Samar Dalani under Biswanath district of Assam. Born on August 25, 1960, Sarmah was son of Jaganidhi Sarma and Yuddha Maya Devi.
Earlier to this, he was awarded with Natya Bhushan title, Basudev Prasad Agarwala Kala Sanskriti Rastriya Samman, Kabi Bhakta Rai Puraskar, Madan Smarak Sahitya Puraskar among others. He was the recipient of District Best Teacher Awards 2018.
