JORHAT, May 4: An alert by fourth grade employee of Kharikatia Uchha Madhyamik school in Titabar sub-division of Jorhat district averted a major mishap after he detected the water tank of the school getting contaminated.
An official source said that the employee Basanta Gogoi informed the school authorities in the morning that the water from the tank had assumed a whitish colour and was emanating a foul smell.
The employee said that he had come as usual at 8:30 am and had switched on the water pumps and then washed his hands at the tank when he noticed the discoloration and foul smell.
After a teacher and headmaster inspected the water in the tank they found it to be contaminated and a plastic container inside the tank, from which the same foul smell was emanating.
The teacher said that the smell was that of a pesticide sprayed in tea gardens.
The school authorities informed the police who came to the spot and took away a sample of the water from the tank to be sent to the PHE department for testing. Further investigation is on.
