Section 144 imposed in Sonitpur

TEZPUR, April 17: The Sonitpur district administration has issued prohibitory orders under section 144 of Cr.P.C., restricting assembly of five or more persons in any public places, unlawful assemblies and prohibition on holding of public meeting for a period of 48 hours from 5 pm on Wednesday till the closure of polling activities in the district.

Presence of political functionaries, party workers, procession functionaries and campaign functionaries etc. in the constituency, who have been brought from outside the constituency for campaigning and non- voters of the constituency, inflammatory or communal or racist or caste or class inclined speeches, slogans, display of such messages through banners, posters, wall writing, circulation of leaflets, handout etc. which may result in intimidation or influence upon electors, canvass for votes or exhibiting any notice or sign related to election, including wearable like caps, shawl etc. with political party’s name, symbol, slogan etc. within the polling station on the day of polling have been prohibited.

The order also restricts the canvassing for votes, display of campaign related poster or banner, persuading any elector not to vote for a particular candidate, persuading any elector not to vote at the election, using or operating any apparatus for amplifying or reproducing the human voice, such as megaphone or a loudspeaker within 100 meters of a polling station, shouting or otherwise acting in a disorderly manner and use of loudspeakers during the next 48 hours. However, the order does not restrict house-to-house visits in connection with door-to-door campaigning.
