TEZPUR, July 2: In view of the upcoming Muharram observance on July 6, the Sonitpur district administration convened a coordination meeting on Tuesday to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival.
The meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and was chaired by District Commissioner Ankur Bharali.
The meeting was attended by Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Magistracy) Twahir Alam, Co-Deputy Commissioners Dyotiva Bora (Dhekiajuli) and Mansh Kumar Saikia (Naduar), Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Madhurima Das, Circle Officers, the Joint Director of Health Services, officers-in-charge of various police outposts, and representatives from the Tezpur United Muharram Committee and its sub-committees.
Key issues discussed during the meeting included procession timings, traffic and crowd management, cleanliness along designated routes, and overall safety measures.
The District Commissioner informed participants that rehearsal processions will be allowed from July 3 to July 5, strictly within the time slots allocated to each committee.
On the day of Muharram, processions in Tezpur town will be permitted between 4 PM and 7 PM, while committees in peripheral areas may hold their processions between 3 PM and 6 PM, but only within their notified areas.
Only officially registered Muharram committees in Tezpur town will be permitted to carry out processions within the town limits.
Emphasising the importance of public safety and order, the District Commissioner urged all Muharram committees to deploy volunteers to assist the administration in maintaining discipline and ensuring that the guidelines are followed.
Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha stressed that no sharp weapons will be allowed during any procession.
He also informed that a detailed traffic route map will be prepared and shared with all relevant stakeholders to avoid congestion and ensure smooth vehicular movement during the observances.
Representatives of various Muharram committees present at the meeting expressed their full cooperation with the district administration and pledged to abide by the stipulated guidelines.
Additionally, all Co-Deputy Commissioners and Circle Development and Security Personnel (CDSPs) have been directed to hold similar coordination meetings in their respective jurisdictions to ensure uniform preparation and execution of safety measures.
The meeting concluded with a collective appeal from district authorities and community leaders to celebrate Muharram peacefully, upholding the spirit of harmony and mutual respect.
