DHUBRI, March 12: The Women’s Cell and Women’s Forum of Dhubri Bholanath College organised a street play titled ‘Kanyaratna’ on Wednesday to spread awareness about the prevention of child marriage and promote gender equality in the premises of Bholanath College, Dhubri.
The play, held in observance of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, was written and directed by Dr Polly Bezbaruah, assistant professor in the Department of Assamese at Bholanath College. Performed by the students of the college, the street play featured Rajdeep Saha, Sehreen Jerrik, Naseem Ullah, Alam, Piyush Pal, Kakoli Roy, Kakli Karmakar, Rumima Sultana, Banshri Dey, Swarif Ahmed, and Dipjyoti Roy.
Their powerful enactment drew appreciation from the audience, who lauded the initiative as a significant step towards social change.
Alongside the street play, the and Women’s Cell and Women’s Forum also hosted a special felicitation program to honour two distinguished women from Dhubri district for their contributions to society and women empowerment.
The honorees were Iramani Bora, a content person of Dhubri district, and Rita Das, a renowned entrepreneur.
The event was presided over by Rita Borah, Vice-Principal of Bholanath College and President of the Teachers’ Wing.
The college’s principal, Dr Kishore Kumar Saha, delivered the welcome address, while Dr Moushumi Das, Coordinator of the Women’s Forum and Head of the Chemistry Department, elaborated on the event’s purpose.
During the meeting, the two awardees, Iramani Bora and Rita Das, shared their experiences and encouraged students and faculty members to contribute towards societal progress.
The program concluded with vote of thanks from Dr Nabami Basumatary, associate professor, Department of Botany.
With the participation of professors, staff, and around 200 students from various departments, the event was deemed a success, reinforcing the college’s commitment to social awareness and women empowerment.
