Guwahati, Nov 13: The Supreme Court on Wednesday strongly criticised an Assam college professor, Md Joynal Abedin, who was arrested for allegedly posting anti-India and obscene content on social media, calling him a “pervert” and “a threat to young girls.” The apex court refused to grant him interim bail, observing that his conduct was unbecoming of an educator and posed a danger to students.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi made sharp remarks while hearing Abedin’s bail plea. “You are in the habit of harassing women on social media and making obscene remarks. You are a perverted man and a threat to young girls in college. What kind of professor are you? You are a shame to the word professor,” the bench said.
The court noted that Abedin, who served at Gossaigaon College in Kokrajhar district, had a pattern of making offensive remarks online. After reviewing his posts, the judges said they were “shocked” by the vulgar content and described him as a person of a “dirty mind” and “a threat to society.”
Abedin’s counsel told the court that his client had apologised and deleted the posts after realising their nature, adding that the chargesheet had already been filed. However, the Assam government’s counsel opposed the plea, asserting that Abedin was a habitual offender.
The bench also took note of the delay in the trial due to the absence of a judicial officer in Gossaigaon court for nearly six months. It requested the Gauhati High Court Chief Justice to appoint a judicial officer there or transfer the case to the Kokrajhar sessions court. Abedin, who was arrested on May 16, remains in custody.
