Two bear cubs rescued from Jorhat village

JORHAT, Feb 26: A resident of Morongial, Deberapar Nakachari area near the Assam-Nagaland border under Mariani Range of Jorhat Forest division found two black coloured bear cubs in the backyard of his house on Wednesday.

According to a Forest department source, Pabitra Gogoi had gone to backyard of his house for some work when he heard some noise resembling the cry of an animal and found two black babies of an animal that seemed to be cubs of a bear.

Gogoi then informed the nearest Forest department camp following which, the staff from the camp came and confirmed that the babies were bear cubs that were likely to be less than two months old.

The village of Gogoi is near the Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest.

Both Gogoi and the Forest staff stated that they had earlier spotted an adult bear in the area from time to time, but for the first time the cubs were found.

The cubs were taken to the Mariani Range office and senior authorities were informed about the recovery of the cubs, which were later shifted to Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), Borjuri near Kaziranga National Park.

The officer said that it could not be ascertained whether they were Sloth or the Asiatic Black Bear as the cubs were infant stage.
