KOKRAJHAR, May 9: A 47-year-old undertrial prisoner, Nakul Mondal, was found dead inside the Kokrajhar District Jail early Friday morning, in what is being suspected as a case of suicide by hanging.
The body was discovered by jail authorities and later recovered by police in the presence of the District Magistrate. Mondal’s remains were subsequently sent for a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
A resident of West Khatalpara village under Basugaon Police Station in Chirang district, Mondal had been in judicial custody since April 30, following his arrest for allegedly attacking his younger brother, Sahadev Mondal, with a sharp weapon during a dispute over family land.
Sources within the jail revealed that Mondal is believed to have hanged himself during the night, though officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway to confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have yet to comment on whether any lapses in jail supervision contributed to the tragic death.
The incident has raised concerns about the mental health and safety of undertrial prisoners in custodial settings and may prompt a review of jail monitoring procedures across the district.
