GUWAHATI, March 1: Ambassador and permanent representative of India to UNESCO, Vishal V. Sharma visited the Moidams – burial mounds of the Ahom Dynasty in Charaideo on Friday.
Ambassador Sharma, who arrived in Charaideo from Paris, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for promoting the Assamese culture globally.
He appreciated the excellent work of preservation and conservation of the rich cultural heritage of the state being undertaken by the state government, the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and the local community.
He said that Modi’s words “Vikas bhi aur Virasat bhi” will act as the guiding light for a new India, as they connect our past with our future. He said that India is a cultural superpower and the Ahom Dynasty is a pride of Indian Culture, and the whole world is now getting to know about the rich Assamese culture and history and appreciate them.
Earlier Ambassador Sharma paid a visit to chief secretary Paban Kumar Barthakur, who briefed him on the state’s nominations to the World Heritage Convention. He was accompanied by Ranjan Sharma, secretary (ITFC), Deepirekha Kouli of the state archeology department and Madan Singh Chauhan, joint DG of ASI and other officials.
Moidams – burial mounds of the Ahom dynasty are India’s nomination for 2023-24 of UNESCO’s World Heritage nominations and efforts are on to get them inscribed on the prestigious World Heritage List.
