KOKRAJHAR, Dec 3: Former Deputy Chief of BTC and MCLA, Kampa Borgoyary has expressed support for an inclusive approach regarding the demand for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six additional communities in Assam.
Addressing the issue, Borgoyary condemned the incident that occurred on November 29 at the BTCLA and emphasised that granting ST status to the six communities should not undermine the rights and privileges of existing ST communities. He stated that if this condition is met, there is no reason for opposition.
Highlighting the significance of the demand, Borgoyary noted that the movement is rooted in the communities’ desire to protect and preserve their cultural heritage. He clarified that it is an internal struggle for recognition and not influenced by any third party.
He added that if the Assam Government has already forwarded the recommendation for the ST status, it is likely that the six communities will receive it. Borgoyary also suggested that BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary engage in discussions with various tribal groups to explore a more inclusive and effective solution.
Concluding his remarks, Borgoyary urged the intellectuals of Assam to come forward and contribute to a constructive, forward-looking approach regarding the proposed ST status for the six communities.
