GUWAHATI, March 12: The assembly witnessed an uproar on Wednesday regarding the termination of at least 73 part time teachers working in the polytechniques across the state. The opposition raised this issue on the floors of the assembly.
“The part time teachers working in the polytechniques across the state were released from their posts as they were recruited against temporary posts in 2016-17. Those part-time teachers went to the High Court seeking regularisation of their services; however, as it is contrary to Assam Public service rule, the Court did not give any direction but put a stay order on the new appointments. Due to this, the permanent recruitments to the polytechniques were stalled for several years.”
“As the Court has withdrawn the earlier stay order, the education department has initiated new recruitment procedures and the 73 part-time teachers were relieved from their posts,” Pegu said, adding that these teachers can apply against the permanent posts.
“I urge all the 73 part-time teachers to apply for permanent posts in which advertisements have been recently published by the department,” the minister said.
Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia brought an adjournment motion on the subject right after Question Hour, requesting a discussion on the termination of 147 teachers, 73 of whom had recently been relieved from their posts.
However, Speaker Biswajit Daimary turned down the demand for a discussion.
According to the Speaker, Congress MLA Diganta Barman had already proposed a resolution to debate the subject during Zero Hour, and the notice had been approved.
“Your party colleague can bring forward this topic for discussion at Zero Hour. Thus, I denied the plea for adjournment,” Daimari told Saikia.
According to the LoP, these teachers have been employed since 2017 and were calling for their services to be regularised.
Saikia said, “The part time teachers were abruptly terminated from service after demonstrating in Guwahati last week. This is incorrect, and we want the government to make a statement.”
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi asserted that Assam is not a “Hitler state” and called for the teachers’ prompt restoration.
The whole opposition, including the Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and Independent MLAs, went to the Well of the House and began yelling slogans while holding placards when the Speaker refused to back down.
The House was subsequently adjourned for ten minutes by Daimary. The opposition persisted in demanding an adjournment motion and the reinstatement of the dismissed faculty when it reconvened.
