DHUBRI, Jan 15: Emphasising the role of women as key drivers of grassroots economic transformation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a major women-led entrepreneurship push in Bilasipara, extending financial assistance to more than 18,000 beneficiaries under the state government’s flagship Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan.

At a programme held at the INA Ground, Sarma distributed entrepreneurship cheques to 18,375 women from the Bilasipara Assembly constituency.

Addressing the gathering of beneficiaries, popularly referred to as “Lakhpati Baideus”, the chief minister outlined the phased design of the scheme and its long-term objective of enabling sustainable livelihoods.

He said the initiative begins with a seed capital grant of Rs 10,000, which was distributed during the event.

“Those who utilise this amount properly will receive Rs 25,000 in the second phase, and in the third phase we will provide Rs 50,000 through grant or loan linkage to help scale up their businesses,” Sarma said, describing the scheme as a structured pathway to entrepreneurship rather than one-time assistance.

The chief minister said the programme reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring economic security for rural households by placing women at the centre of development planning.

He added that women-led enterprises have the potential to transform village economies, create local employment and strengthen social stability.

Sarma said the government’s broader vision is to create a generation of financially independent women who contribute actively to Assam’s growth story.

He reiterated that the success of the scheme would depend not just on financial support but also on discipline, hard work and responsible utilisation of funds by the beneficiaries.

The initiative, he said, is part of a wider effort to empower women through self-employment, strengthen rural incomes and ensure inclusive development across Assam.
