World Hearing Day celebrated with friendly match

GUWAHATI, March 3: On Sunday, World Hearing Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Changing mindsets: Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all’ through a friendly match between students of Purvuttor Pratibandhi Pratisthan and Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital. The event, held at the college’s field, showcased the power of sports in bridging gaps among individuals with diverse abilities. The match was jointly organised by Dr Jyotirmoy Sarmah and Dr Alakesh Mazumdar, department of Shalakya Tantra, GACH, Guwahati.

J P Sahariah, principal, PIPWD, Guwahati, Dr Dhaneshwar Kalita, president, Purvuttor Pratibandhi Pratisthana and former principal, GACH, Guwahati, and Prof (Dr) Yanbeni Humtsoe, vice principal, GACH, Guwahati, were the guests of honour for the event and delivered their inaugural speeches. Students, faculties, and local residents gathered to express their unwavering support for both teams. Spectators cheered enthusiastically, creating an electric atmosphere. GACH emerged victorious by securing a 2-1 victory. The event concluded with a closing ceremony where participants were honoured for their sportsmanship and spirit of togetherness. Jwngpu Borgoyary was honoured as the player of the match, and Askinas Hemborm was honoured as the best emerging player of the match.

Reflecting on the event, Jwngpu Borgoyary, a hearing-impaired student, expressed his joy at being part of such a memorable occasion. “It is a matter of immense honour and pleasure to be awarded as the best player of the match for the third time in a row. The entire team had a great time playing with the students of GACH.”

Dr Jyotirmoy Sarmah, the organiser and HOD of Department of Shalakya Tantra, mentioned, “This is the fourth time the Department of Shalakya Tantra (ENT) is organising this friendly football match to encourage the hearing-impaired students on the occasion of World Hearing Day and reflect the college’s commitment towards creating an empowering environment among the students through the spirit of sportsmanship.”

The friendly football match was an attempt to provide a platform for the talents and potentials of individuals with diverse hearing abilities to come together, learn from each other, and celebrate their shared passion for sports with mutual respect and enthusiasm. By leveraging the match as a platform, the Shalakya Department and Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital aimed at promoting hearing health and inclusivity within the locality and beyond.
