SIVASAGAR, June 20: Rajneel Hazarika, the bayan of the local namghar near historic Athaisagar Borpukhuri in Sivasagar and a resident of GGS Tin Ali, was taken into police custody on Wednesday in connection with the mysterious placement of an ancient golden Krishna idol, attempting to create a sensation among the people.
Nijora Das, a middle-aged woman, found the stolen idol in front of her residence in Rudrasagar on Monday evening. Alongside the idol, she found a letter from an unknown person, neatly typed in Assamese, stating that the person’s family had inherited the idol from their great-grandfather’s days and had been devotedly worshipping it. However, after the tragedy of losing four babies over the last ten years, the couple is now expecting a new baby. Before the arrival of the new baby, they decided to donate the idol to a namghar.
