GUWAHATI, Feb 27: Topcem Cement has launched its 9th Free Cataract Surgery and Eye Check-Up Camp in collaboration with Eye Doctors – An Eye Clinic & Surgery Centre, reinforcing its commitment to community healthcare in Assam.
The 15-day outreach programme commenced on February 27 and cover rural and semi-urban areas across Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa and Kamrup Metropolitan districts.
The districts were selected based on the need for accessible and affordable eye care services, particularly among economically disadvantaged sections.
During the camp, around 250 individuals will undergo comprehensive eye examinations conducted by a team of ophthalmologists and trained medical professionals.
Screenings will focus on identifying cataracts, refractive errors, age-related vision issues and other ocular conditions.
Patients will also receive prescriptions, medical advice and guidance for further treatment where required.
As part of the initiative, Topcem Cement will sponsor 40 free cataract surgeries for eligible patients diagnosed during the screenings.
The surgeries will be carried out at the Eye Doctors Institute & Surgery Centre in Guwahati, with the company bearing the cost of pre-operative assessments, surgical procedures, post-operative care and necessary medication.
Dr Anil Kapur, Senior President – Sales & Marketing, Meghalaya Cements Ltd., said cataract remains one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in India, especially in rural areas with limited healthcare access.
He stated that the initiative aims to restore vision and improve quality of life by enabling beneficiaries to regain independence and return to work.
Since launching the Free Cataract Surgery initiative in 2018, Topcem Cement has facilitated 240 cataract surgeries across the region as of 2025.
The company said the programme aligns with the objectives of the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment and reflects its broader focus on sustainable community development.
