IMPHAL, Mar 15: In a massive security operation, Manipur Police, in coordination with central security forces, managed to identify and defuse two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) placed by insurgents on a Manipur-Myanmar border ridge in Churachandpur district on Friday.
The operation also led to the seizure of a huge cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives, officials confirmed.
The operation was conducted on the basis of intelligence reports from along the Myanmar border, wherein tribal insurgents were said to be marching along the border region to make their presence felt. In rapid response, a joint force of Indian security personnel was put on alert and carried out a surprise search operation at the very long and thin hilltop of Dampi in the Churachandpur district, which shares its southern border with Myanmar.
During the search, security forces recovered different weapons and explosive materials. The recovered items included a.303 Rifle with a magazine, a single-barrel locally made gun, a.22 locally made rifle, and two Pumpi (locally made long-range mortars). Apart from that, they also seized two 70 mm live cartridges, four live Pumpi cartridges, eight anti-riot stun shells, two SMC carbine magazines, a Baofeng radio set, a bulletproof helmet, two jungle boots, and an ammo pouch.
The quick action of the security forces effectively neutralized a potential threat and prevented insurgents from making attacks in the region. The operation demonstrates the concerted efforts of the Manipur Police and central security forces in the maintenance of peace and security along the vulnerable border areas. Investigations are underway to identify the source of the recovered weapons and the insurgent groups who had laid the explosives.
