IMPHAL, Oct 15: Manipur police on Friday arrested a gang leader with a large number of monetary demand letters in the name of an underground gang – Coalition for Liberation with Globalization of Kangleipak (COLIGK).
The arrested person has been identified as Paikhomba Wahengbam alias Yohenba Mangang (30) of Bishnupur district.
A team of Imphal West district police commandos arrested him from a rented house at Kwakeithel in Imphal West district on Friday around 5 am.
The police commandos recovered 99 letterheads of COLIGK, four demand letters of COLIGK signed by self-styled Yohenba Mangang, finance and account of COLIGK, one laptop, one ink tank printer, one motorcycle (Pleasure brand), one i20 car, one pen drive and two mobile phones.
A wallet containing one driving license, an ATM card, Rs 6,000, 2000 Korean Won, 110 Bangladesh Taka, 700 Myanmar Kyat and 140 Thailand Baht also seized from his possession, the police said.
Addressing media, Imphal West SP, Ksh Shivakanta said that during preliminary investigation, the police revealed that the arrested person was the mastermind of the gang and trying to further the activities of the gang.
During interrogation, it has been revealed that the arrested man had served monetary demand letters to 40 colleges affiliated to Manipur University, director of AYUSH and various print, electronic media and admins of various social media pages.
The police officer also said that a team of Imphal West police commandos arrested the person during an investigation into the inputs regarding formation of the new underground organization — Coalition for Liberation with Globalization of Kangleipak (COLIGK).
The police have the information that the newly floated underground organization has been serving demand letters and threats to various government institutions, hospitals, etc. in the name of the organization, said the police officer.
After analysis of technical INT and through human INT, the suspect was identified and his whereabouts were zoned in Kwakeithel area of Imphal West district.
The police commandos immediately rushed to the area and conducted a search operation at some suspected houses.
During the operation, one unknown person was found in a suspicious manner at the rented house.
Due to his suspicious manner, the police commandos detained him and during spot verification, he turned out to be the member of the newly floated underground group, the SP further said.
The arrested person along with the seized items has been handed over to Imphal police station for further investigation, the SP informed.
The police officer then appealed to the general public and government institutions to inform and cooperate with police so that such activities can be stopped at the earliest. (NNN)
