SHILLONG, June 16: As rain continues to wreak havoc in Meghalaya, multiple instances of flooding and landslides are being reported from various parts of the state. The situation turned for the worse on Thursday when a portion of the National Highway 6 caved in due to incessant rains near Lumshnong Toll Plaza under the Lumshnong Police Station in East Jaintia Hills.
In another incident, 4 members of a family, all minors, were killed due to landslide in Laitrarem village under the Mawphlang Block, East Khasi Hills District on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 10 AM.
The incident was confirmed by the village secretary of Laitlarem John W Kharmyndai.
On the other hand, one light motor vehicle went deep down into a caved portion of the highway in Lad Brishyrnot followed by six wheelers trucks. No casualty was reported.
The landslide at Lumshong has disrupted vehicular movement along the highway and people have been advised to avoid taking the route, said the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) officials.
“Efforts are on to clear the blocked route and necessary assistance is being provided to stranded passengers,” they added.
The Lumshong toll plaza has also been damaged due to the landslide. Sources said the vehicular movement has been heavily affected and connectivity to Silchar and areas beyond has been cut off.
The superintendent of police, Khliehriat has been tasked by the DC to depute police personnel onsite to prevent vehicles from crossing the submerged road from both sides until the water level recedes to normal in coordination with the block development officer, Saipung C&RD Block.
According to the East Jaintia Hills administration the NH 06 has been damaged at multiple locations across the district especially from Nongsning to Ratacherra stretch. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Shillong has issued a red alert for South West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia and East Jaintia Hills districts.
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma held a review meeting on Thursday with deputy commissioners of different districts, following which they decided to form four regional committees, which will be headed by a minister.
Meghalaya has been hit by intense rain, floods and landslides this year, leaving several people displaced.
