GUWAHATI, Aug 3: The Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) in Assam has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first open university in the country to introduce four-year undergraduate courses in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. All academic programmes have been restructured according to the UGC credit framework, making KKHSOU a pioneering institution in open education, officials announced on Thursday.
Assam’s education minister, Ranoj Pegu, conducted a meeting to review the university’s courses and admission process.
“Visited Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (@KKHSOU1) and reviewed ongoing admission. The University contributes immensely to improving Assam’s Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) with one lakh enrolment in 43 programs,” minister Pegu shared on Twitter.
The university currently has over 1 lakh students enrolled, with 14,000 students already admitted this year. Minister Pegu also assured parents and students that the degrees and diplomas offered by KKHSOU are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and hold the same equivalence as any other university such as GU or DU. He emphasised the commitment to maintaining the quality of education in the university.
Minister Pegu encouraged students who have not secured admission to regular undergraduate courses to consider applying to the state open university. KKHSOU operates 276 study centers and a regional center in Jorhat, offering a diverse range of 44 academic programs at present, according to university officials. (With inputs from PTI)
