JORHAT, March 10: A 13-year-old girl was found by people at Nimatighat (Ferry Ghat) on the outskirts here on Sunday when she was reportedly about to board a ferry to Majuli island. She intended to go to her aunt’s house in Lakhimpur due to alleged ill-treatment and torture by her stepmother.

According to sources, as people spotted the minor at the Ghat alone, they inquired about the matter and were told by the girl that she wanted to go to her aunt’s place in Lakhimpur via Majuli as she could no longer bear the alleged mistreatment and torture from her stepmother.

The people then took her to the Nimatighat Police Outpost and handed her over, after which members of the local Child Helpline Unit arrived and took the girl with them. The girl is from a village on the outskirts of Lahdoigarh.
