Urs celebration in Margherita draws people cutting across caste, creed

MARGHERITA, Feb 27: The annual Urs celebration of Maa Bibi Mariam Fatema Mazhar was held on Thursday which is located in Namdang, Margherita and is 5 kilometres away from Margherita headquarter has drawn thousands of devotees from across the state.

The Mazhar, a sacred shrine, has become a symbol of communal harmony, attracting people from diverse faiths and backgrounds.

The Urs celebration, which commemorates the death anniversary of Bibi Mariam Fatema, began with the traditional religious Chador offering ceremony during morning hours where devotees from various parts of Assam irrespective of caste, creed, race, language and religion gathered at the Mazhar sacred shrine to pay their respects and seek blessings.

Md Toufik Khan general secretary of Bibi Mariam Fatema Mazhar Development Committee said that every year Annual Urs is celebrated on the last Thursday of February. Here, people from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed, race, language and religion come here in large numbers. 

Bibi Mariam Fatema belonged to Syed Dynasty whose ancestors in the year 1882 came from North West Frontier Province, Baluchistan, Pakistan then under British India to work at Assam Railway and Trading Company Limited Margherita and later they were settled at Makrani line in Ledo and Pathan line in Bargolai under Margherita, where in the year 1890 Syed Dynasty people built a Masjid and Kabarsthan (Graveyard) at Namdang, Margherita said Md Toufik Khan.

In the year 1902 Bibi Mariam Fatema died at Namdang and she was buried and the place become a sacred shrine, where it is believed if a person pray with full devotion than the person wishes come true said Md Toufik Khan.

Bibi Fatema Mariam’s descendants are still alive and they lived at Vineer mill Bazaar, Margherita said Md. Toufik Khan.

Bibi Mariam Fatema Mazhar located in Namdang, Margherita, is one of the most revered shrines in Assam, attracting devotees from all over the country as the Mazhar is believed to possess mystical powers and devotees come here to seek solace, peace and prosperity said Khan. “The annual Urs celebration is a testament to the communal harmony and syncretic traditions of Assam as people from different faiths and backgrounds come together to pray, share food and celebrate the occasion and the event promotes unity, peace, love, brotherhood and understanding among people, reinforcing the values of tolerance and coexistence,” Md Toufik Khan said.
