Guwahati, Nov 13: Guwahati police seized around 40 kg of cannabis during a late-night operation near the Inter State Bus Terminal in the Azara area, leading to the arrest of a man from Uttar Pradesh. The crackdown followed specific intelligence about the movement of narcotics through the busy transit zone.
According to officials, a team from the West Guwahati Police District under Azara police station set up a naka after receiving inputs about drugs being transported from the ISBT area. During the check, the police stopped a suspect and searched his luggage, which led to the recovery of 41 packets of cannabis hidden inside two trolley bags and three travel bags.
The accused has been identified as Amit Ram, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. He was taken into custody on the spot and later arrested after the seizure was confirmed. Police said the recovered cannabis weighed approximately 40 kg, pointing to an organised attempt to move narcotics through Guwahati.
Senior police officials said legal action has been initiated against the accused under relevant sections of the law. Further investigation is underway to find out where the consignment came from and whether others are involved in the network.
