IMPHAL, March 30(NNN): Two persons including a woman were apprehended with a large quantity of banned codeine cough syrup bottles in a raid at a pharmacy in Lamphel area of Imphal West district, a police source said on Thursday.
A total of 921 bottles of the banned cough syrup were recovered during the raid at the Universal Pharma at Lamphel Sana Keithel area under Lamphel police station, the police source also said.
The two persons arrested with the contraband item have been identified as one Md Riyazuddin and Rojila Devi, according to the police.
A team of Imphal East police commandos arrested the duo after the contraband cough syrup bottles were detected during the search operation.
The police source said that, based on specific information regarding selling of cough syrups to unauthorised customers, the police commando team conducted the search operation of the pharmacies in the area on Wednesday evening.
The police accused the arrested duo of being engaging in backdoor selling of the banned cough syrup.
The seized cough syrup comes under narcotics. Even for sale and purchase, the bill has to be maintained and doctors’ prescription is must.
One cannot store the item in a huge quantity as these drugs are being misused on a large scale in the state.
