JORHAT, April 3: The Jorhat district unit of AJYCP on Monday staged a sit-in stir programme in front of the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office complex to protest against hike in prices of essential medicines, fees of toll gates in the state, hike in monthly fixed charges of connections paid by APDCL consumers, and skyrocketing of prices of essential commodities.
The protesters said that the protest was carried out as per the students’ body state-wide stir programme to express resentment over central government’s decision to allow drug companies to steeply increase the prices of over 300 medicine, raising toll gate fees in Assam, fixed charges rate hike by APDCL – all decisions coming into affect from this month (April).
Holding banners and placards the protesters shouted slogans seeking government’s intervention to roll back the decisions. They stated that common people were already reeling under the severe economic impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in loss of livelihood to a vast section of the population and soaring up of prices of all essentials.

The students’ body later submitted memoranda to the Prime Minister, union road transport and highways and Assam chief minister separately seeking withdrawal of the decisions of hiking of prices of medicines, toll gate fees and APDCL fixed charges levied from consumers.
Jorhat district unit AJYCP president and general secretary – Pranabjyoti Saikia and Babu Dutta respectively, central committee cultural secretary Suraj Kalita, publicity secretary Ahimjyoti Saikia, executive member Nabajyoto Baruah and Jorhat district unit Adviser Zakir Hussain took part in the stir programme.
