GUWAHATI, Sept 9: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the BJP’s membership campaign in Assam has reached 13 lakh in just one week and is expected to surpass last year’s numbers.
Sarma stated that the BJP has gained almost 13 lakh new members since the drive began on September 2.
“We are confident that we will exceed the 18 lakh membership from last year. Membership will be conducted via missed calls to a specific number until September 25. After September 25, if needed, party officials will start a manual membership drive.
“Our party workers will assist with filling out membership applications by hand,” Sarma further added while encouraging the public to join the BJP during this campaign.
Regarding the Congress party’s ambition to win at least 80 seats in the next assembly elections, Sarma took a swipe at their plans.
“There is no objection to any party contesting the elections. My best wishes to them,” he said.
Sarma also declined to comment on Ripun Bora’s decision to rejoin the Congress party after leaving the Trinamool Congress.
“One leader has left Congress for TMC and has now returned to Congress. BJP is not involved, so I have no comment on this development,” Sarma said.
For context, Bora had left Mamata Banerjee’s TMC questioning her leadership on the party’s expansion in Assam and joined Congress on Sunday.
