BOKO, Jan 20: The vibrant and culturally rich 63rd Annual Conference of Bodo Sahitya Sabha kicked off on Friday in Boko with a grand display of Bodo tradition and culture.
The event witnessed a mesmerizing Bagrumba dance performance by 500 Bodo girls at Boko Gandhi Maidan Samannya Kshetra.
Poets from various linguistic backgrounds, including Boro, Assamese, Garo, Hajong, Rabha, Missing, Nepali, Bengali, English, Hindi, Karbi, Dimasa, Miching, and Tiwa, came together to celebrate the literary diversity during the three-day conference.
The conference, attended by around 2,000 delegates from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and different parts of India, saw the inauguration of eleven sub-committees’ temporary offices, including the main entrance, main stage, exhibition, and book fair doors.
According to Nagarmal Swargiary, executive president of the Reception Committee, the convention is expected to draw a daily attendance of 30,000 to 50,000 people.
On the first day, a multilingual poet’s conference, presided over by professor Dr Anil Boro, showcased the literary richness of the region. The venue also featured exhibits depicting Boro family life, including traditional houses, Batho Puja ceremonies, pig pens, handloom, and paddy barns.
On the second day, Assam education minister Ronoj Pegu addressed the gathering, emphasising the government’s commitment to linguistic diversity. Minister Pegu also highlighted the importance of education reform and announced the recruitment of over 200,000 teachers by the CM Himanta Biswar Sarma-led government.
The conference also witnessed the release of the souvenir for the 63rd Boro Sahitya Sabha by Pegu.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Tankeswar Rabha, Assam Sahitya Sabha president Surya Hazarika, and other dignitaries attended the event.
Biswajit Daimary, speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, graced the conference as the chief guest on the second day, commending the 500 Bodo dancers’ performance.
Daimary acknowledged the unique role of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha in promoting both literary and linguistic development.
Hemanta Boro, a member of the organising committee, highlighted the diverse traditional Bodo dances performed during the conference, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Bodo community.
