70.67 Per Cent Turnout Recorded 2nd Phase Of LS Polls In Diphu

DIPHU, April 25: A total of 70.67 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the six LAC segments under the 6 – Diphu (ST) Parliamentary Constituency for the second phase of the Lok Sabha election, according to an official statement from the District Information & Public Relations (Hills).

Apart from delays at some polling stations in the morning due to malfunctioning EVMs, the polling process was largely peaceful.

BJP candidate Amarsing Tisso and his wife Nirola Phangchopi, secretary of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), cast their votes at Siloni LP School, Longnit (Left Wing).

Tisso arrived at around 10 am to cast his vote. As soon as he arrived at the polling station, Tisso and his wife Phangchopi proceeded to cast their votes. After exiting the polling booth, they displayed the indelible ink mark on their fingers and raised victory signs.

Speaking to the media, Tisso expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president JP Nadda, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang, and the people of the hill district for their immense support.

Congress candidate Joyram Engleng cast his vote at his home village Dalimbari LP School, West Karbi Anglong. After voting, Engleng urged people to vote peacefully, emphasising the importance of popular support despite financial disparities between parties.

Independent candidate JI Kathar, backed by the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC), cast his vote at Town Basic LP School, here.

He also expressed confidence in winning with 5 lakh votes and highlighted instances of irregularities at certain polling stations.

According to party sources, Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) candidate Jotson Bey cast his vote despite his ill health.

At Siloni LP School polling station Right Wing, first-time voter Harbamon Timung of Longnit expressed excitement at exercising his right to vote for the first time, emphasising his vote for better education, development, and the implementation of an Autonomous State.

On the other hand, a sick woman, Kaneshowri Chetri of Bethany Model Village, was brought to the polling station in a wheelchair by family members.

Three elderly women aged over 80 years from Harcheali covered more than 3 km on foot to reach the polling station, highlighting their dedication despite transportation challenges.

Polling percentages varied throughout the day across different LACs and by 5:00 p.m., the polling percentages stood at impressive figures, reflecting active participation in the democratic process.
