DIBRUGARH, July 15: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a protest on Monday along National Highway-37 in Banipur, Dibrugarh district, condemning the persistent waterlogging issues plaguing the area.

For over 25 days, the stretch of NH-37 passing through Banipur has remained submerged, forcing residents to navigate knee-deep waters.

AASU members voiced strong criticism against the BJP government and the newly formed Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) for their failure to address the longstanding waterlogging problem.

“The NH-37 has been inundated for the past 25 days, causing immense hardship to the local residents. This highway connects Tinsukia and Arunachal Pradesh, yet the district administration has failed miserably to drain the water,” lamented an AASU member.

He continued, “Due to the incompetence of the concerned departments, the people of Dibrugarh are suffering. Instead of resolving the issue, these departments have been blaming each other, exacerbating the problem. This year’s waterlogging situation has set a new record.”

“We have issued warnings to the DMC and other concerned authorities to take immediate action. If they fail to resolve the issue within the given timeframe, we will escalate our protests,” declared the AASU member.

Continuing rainfall over five hours recently exacerbated waterlogging across Dibrugarh city, further aggravating the plight of residents during the monsoon season.

Earlier, members of the Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti (CMSS) had also protested on NH-37 in Chabua town, Dibrugarh, using fishing nets as a symbolic gesture against the ongoing waterlogging issues.
