Guwahati, Feb 8: The Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024, was tabled in the ongoing Budget session of the state legislative assembly on Wednesday.
The bill proposes to merge the Board of Secondary Education Board, Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) into the School Education Board, Assam. The new board will conduct final exams from Class 9 to Class 12.
Cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika presented the bill on behalf of education minister Ranoj Pegu. Pegu noted that this merger follows the National Education Policy’s new system of e-Vidyalaya Shiksha, which covers Class 1 up to Class 12.
He also suggested that the system of recognizing high-achieving students in Class 10 board exams may be abolished. The proposed School Education Board, Assam will be composed of a chairman, vice-chairmen of each division, and various ex-officio members, all nominated by the government.
The board will also include co-opted members and an ex-officio secretary for each division. The chairman and vice-chairmen will serve three-year terms, and members must be under 70 years old at the time of appointment or re-appointment.
