JORHAT, April 1: Dr Rajendra Singh Paroda, a former Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi and also a former secretary of Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), on Tuesday said that innovation along with infrastructure development and a proper policies is essential for the progress and revolution of agriculture.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 57th foundation day celebration of Assam Agricultural University at AAU’s main campus here, Dr Paroda stressed on infrastructure development alongwith innovation and proper policies for progress in the agriculture sector.
He further said that adequate food crops must be produced and distributed to achieve social development goals. The ex ICAR DG said that therefore emphasis needs to be placed on food security and nutritional food security measures.
In this regard, considerable emphasis needs to be placed on indigenous food systems, he said. Further expansion should be carried out through proper water use and increased crop planting through small scale irrigation projects.
The eminent agricultural scientist gave an overall review of horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, farming systems, etc., in the all-India context and said that agriculture includes everything as a whole.
“We cannot exclude animal husbandry or others. For maximum results, everyone must be involved in a coordinated manner,” he added.
AAU Vice Chancellor Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka spoke about the progress of the University and about the steps taken to promote innovative thinking and enhance capacity in the agri sector.
He also spoke about the various kinds of training imparted to the students and those interested in taking up farming activities.
Two former AAU Vice Chancellors Dr GL Kaul and Professor A N Mukhopadhyay,v who attended the function as guests of honour, also addressed the gathering.
The vote of thanks was offered by AAU Registrar Dr Tapan Kumar Gohain.
Earlier, after hoisting the flag at the sports ground of the University, a colourful procession was taken out by the AAU family.
