The information was provided in an official statement, which mentioned that the appointments are part of the state government’s larger commitment to creating over 1.5 lakh government jobs.

Addressing the gathering, chief minister Sarma said the state government has been working diligently to address the longstanding demand-supply mismatch of doctors in Assam.

In this context, he noted that the number of medical colleges in the state has been increasing steadily. Currently, 13 medical colleges are functional, producing around 1,600 doctors annually.

Sarma stated that the government has outlined a roadmap to establish 29 medical colleges across the state by 2030, a move aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring availability of doctors in rural and remote areas.

He also noted that Assam currently has 13 Medical Colleges and Hospitals, 22 District Hospitals, 17 Sub-Divisional Hospitals, 221 Community Health Centres, 1,017 Primary Health Centres, and 4,875 Sub-Centres staffed with doctors and paramedics.

Sarma emphasised the government’s efforts to make the health sector both patient- and technology-friendly, acknowledging the evolving nature of healthcare delivery systems.

The chief minister said that the newly appointed doctors will significantly improve access to quality healthcare, especially for vulnerable sections of society, including the poor in rural areas.

Of the 400 newly appointed doctors, 36 are specialists in fields such as Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anesthesia, Medicine, Dermatology, and Orthopaedics.

These specialists will serve in district hospitals, civil hospitals, and First Referral Units (FRUs) to meet growing healthcare demands.

Since 2021, the state government has appointed 1,283 doctors. With the addition of the latest batch, the total number has risen to 1,683.

Congratulating the newly appointed doctors, chief minister Sarma urged them to serve patients with dedication, compassion, and empathy, and to uphold the government’s commitment to accessible and quality healthcare for all.
