TEZPUR, July 12: Eminent Assamese film and stage actor Junu Baruah passed away at her Tezpur Bishnu Nagar residence on Friday morning around 9:30 am. She had been suffering from a prolonged illness. Daughter of noted Gandhian Lakhidhar Sarmah, the late Junu Baruah got involved in the cultural field from her school days.
She began her acting career in 1963, performing in ‘Simantar Jui’, a play by Prafulla Bora staged at the historic Baan Theater. She acted in several plays and Assamese movies, including ‘An Inspector’s Call’ directed by Natasurya Phani Sarmah, ‘Nakal Hira’ directed by Mancha Konwar Chandradhar Goswami, ‘Nibaran Bhattacharyya’, ‘Tini Purukh’, ‘Senehor Chiga Khuti’, and ‘Kuwoli’ directed by Sujit Singha, among many others.
Her roles in Assamese movies included ‘Dr Bezbaruah’, ‘Duronir Rong’, ‘Bohagor Duporia’, ‘Mohaxomor’, ‘Dhrubatora’, ‘Rikshwala’, ‘Porinam’, ‘Tumi Mur Mathu Mur’, ‘Satyam Sivam Sundaram’, ‘Patni’, ‘Krishnasura’, ‘Akashitorar Kothare’, ‘Jalanjali’, and ‘Rag-Birag’. Additionally, she won acclaim for her performances in several TV serials (Doordarshan), such as ‘Dewta Aru Patni’, ‘Molok Guin Guin’, ‘Dolongor Xitu Par Nai’, ‘Ritu Ahe Rirtu Jai’, ‘Anek Phular Xurabhi’, ‘Pratighat’, ‘Xondhya Tora’, ‘Torali’, ‘Rong Birong’, ‘Xahu Aai’, ‘Jowai’, ‘Kokaideo’, ‘Raj Hawlir Birangona’, ‘Bijoya’, ‘Uttaran’, and ‘Hanumanor Xadhu’, among others.
Late Junu Baruah, former vice president of Baan Theater, was associated with several socio-cultural organisations, including Tezpur District Mahila Committee, Bowa-Kota Samabay Samiti, Moitree Sangha, Samannay Sangha, Puspanjali Mahila Sangha, and Sadou Asam Lekhika Samaroh Samittee. A recipient of artists’ pension, late Baruah received numerous prestigious awards for her contributions to Assamese theater and cinema, including the veteran actor late Bhola Kalita Memorial Award.
Upon receiving news of her demise, people from various walks of life and organisations, including Baan Theater, Sonitpur Press Club, Journalists’ Federation of Assam, and DC Sonitpur Deba Kumar Mishra, rushed to her residence to pay their last respects to the departed soul. She is survived by her daughter-in-law and granddaughters.
